With reference to solar water pumps, consider the following statements:
1. Solar power can be used for running surface pumps and not for submersible pumps.
2. Solar power can be used for running centrifugal pumps and not the ones with piston.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Show answer
Answer: D. Neither 1 nor 2
Verdict
Correct statements: Neither 1 nor 2 → Option (d).
Statement by statement
Statement 1 – INCORRECT: Solar water pump systems are commonly seen in residential and commercial uses, as well as for irrigation of agricultural land. Through solar panels, the pump can eliminate the cost of energy and provide a more feasible option that uses energy from the sun for pumping water. Pumps are also classified as submersible and surface pumps, based on their placement (underwater and above the waterline). Solar power can run both submersible and surface pumps. Hence statement 1 is not correct.
Statement 2 – INCORRECT: When it comes to stand-alone solar pumping systems, the main types include rotating and positive displacement pumps. Centrifugal pumps are the common choice for rotation and are designed for fixed head applications. A positive displacement (PD) pump moves a fluid by repeatedly enclosing a fixed volume and moving it mechanically through the system. The pumping action is cyclic and can be driven by pistons, screws, gears, rollers, diaphragms or vanes. Solar power can run both centrifugal and piston pumps. Hence statement 2 is not correct.
