- SubjectScience and Technology
- TopicInformation and Communication Technology
- DifficultyHard
- TypeStatement
Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) are used to create digital display in many devices. What are the advantages of OLED displays over Liquid Crystal displays?
1. OLED displays can be fabricated on flexible plastic substrates.
2. Roll-up displays embedded in clothing can be made using OLEDs.
3. Transparent displays are possible using OLEDs.
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
Show answer
Answer: C. 1, 2 and 3
Verdict
The answer is 1, 2 and 3. OLED displays can be made on flexible plastic substrates, embedded in clothing as roll up displays, and made transparent.
Analysis
All three statements are CORRECT and all three follow from one architectural difference. An OLED emits its own light, so it needs no backlight, whereas a liquid crystal display modulates light from a backlight behind it. Removing the backlight removes a rigid, bulky layer, which is what permits flexible plastic substrates, roll up and clothing embedded displays, and transparency. OLED layers can also be deposited by inkjet printing onto almost any substrate, which is why the manufacturing route differs fundamentally from that of liquid crystal panels.

How to crack it
Find the single physical difference between the two technologies and derive every listed advantage from it. Self emission against backlighting explains flexibility, transparency, thinness, contrast and viewing angle all at once. Where a question lists three advantages of a newer technology over an older one and all three trace to the same design change, the inclusive option is the natural answer, and resisting the instinct against all of the above is the discipline required.
