1. Kinnaur : Areca nut
2. Mewat : Mango
3. Coromandel : Soyabean

Which of the above pairs is/are correctly matched?

  1. 1 and 2 only
  2. 3 only
  3. 1, 2 and 3
  4. None
Show answer

Answer: D. None

Verdict

The answer is none. All three region and crop pairs are wrong, which is why the fourth option is the key.

Analysis

Pair 1 is INCORRECT. Areca nut needs a humid tropical climate and is grown chiefly in Karnataka, Kerala and Assam, whereas Kinnaur is a cold, high altitude district of Himachal Pradesh known for apples and dry fruit. Pair 2 is INCORRECT. Mewat, in southern Haryana, is not a recognised mango belt; mango production is concentrated in Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar and the western coast. Pair 3 is INCORRECT. Soyabean is overwhelmingly a central Indian crop, led by Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, and not a Coromandel coast crop.

How to crack it

Test crop and region pairs against climate before recall. Areca nut needs heavy rainfall and warmth, which rules out a cold desert district straight away, and soyabean is a black soil crop of the plateau, which rules out a coastal plain. Candidates often reject the None option on instinct because it feels like a trick, but UPSC does use it, and here the climatic test confirms it independently three times over.
