Answer: C. 2 and 3 only

Verdict

The answer is 2 and 3 only. Earth Hour is a WWF initiative, not a UNEP or UNESCO one, though the description of the switch off and its purpose is accurate.

Analysis

Statement 1 is INCORRECT. Earth Hour is organised by WWF, the World Wide Fund for Nature, and began in Sydney in 2007. Statement 2 is CORRECT. Participants switch off non essential lights for one hour on a designated evening each year. Statement 3 is CORRECT. The purpose is to raise public awareness of climate change and of the need for individual and collective action.

How to crack it

The organiser is the tested fact in almost every campaign question, so log initiative, organiser and year as one line whenever a global campaign appears in the news. Note the structural giveaway too: statements 2 and 3 simply describe what everyone knows the campaign does, so the question cannot turn on them, and the examiner's real target must be statement 1. Identifying which statement is doing the work is often faster than evaluating all three.
