  1. Equal pay for equal work for both men and women
  2. Participation of workers in the management of industries
  3. Right to work, education and public assistance
  4. Securing living wage and human conditions of work to workers
Show answer

Answer: B. Participation of workers in the management of industries

Verdict

The answer is participation of workers in the management of industries. That principle was added by the Forty Second Amendment.

Analysis

The Forty Second Amendment Act of 1976 added four new Directive Principles: securing opportunities for the healthy development of children under Article 39, promoting equal justice and free legal aid under Article 39A, securing the participation of workers in the management of industries under Article 43A, and protecting and improving the environment and safeguarding forests and wildlife under Article 48A. The remaining three options, equal pay for equal work, right to work and education, and living wage and humane conditions, all belong to the original list of 1950.

How to crack it

Learn the amendments to Part IV as a short closed list rather than learning Part IV as a whole, since only two amendments ever added Directive Principles: the Forty Second in 1976 with four, and the Forty Fourth in 1978 with one, on minimising inequalities in income under Article 38. Five additions in total, each with an article number, covers every question of this type. Note that Article 48A is the environmental hook UPSC uses most often.
